SPF SIG
The Underage Drinking Prevention Program is implemented through a State Prevention Framework State Incentive (SPF SIG) Grant. Funding for the grant is provided byDepartment of human Services, Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP). Strategies the program has implemented include evidence based education programs in Izard County Schools, a Mass Media Campaign to educate about underage drinking in our county, and a Parents Who Host Campaign to 3educate parents and other adults about the dangers and legal consequences of providing alcohol to youth.
Project Northland
In l 2008 the Izard County Hometown health Coalition implemented implemented Project Northland, a proven, evidence-based program. The program was implemented in Melbourne and Calico Rock School Districts primarily in 6th grade classes. In the 2009-2010 school year the program will be expanded to include 7th and 8th grade classes. The goals of Project Northland are to delay the age when young people begin drinking, reduce alcohol use among young people who have already tried drinking, and limit the number of alcohol-related problems of young people.
The programs of Project Northland provide state-of-the-art prevention materials for 6th Grade with the Slick Tracy Home Team Program, 7th Grade with the Amazing Alternatives Program, and 8th Grade with the Power Lines Program. These programs invite participation and experiential learning at home and in the classroom.
